Lapland, Finland, A Winter Poem
We followed the hush of falling snow,
Four generations, hearts aglow,
Tim and I, my parents near,
Two bright children, full of cheer.
North we went, where night feels kind,
To Lapland, magic, pine, and time.
Reindeer bells in velvet air,
Father Christmas, everywhere.
Dog sled runners sang and flew,
laughing loud the whole way through.
Cocoa warm in mittened hands,
Stories spun like snowy lands.
We skied and slid on silver days,
tubing trails and frozen plays.
In that glow of winter light,
Memories stitched so softly, so bright.
A place that keeps our wonder fast,
Lapland love that always lasts.
And just like that, the poem became real. What we imagined in soft verses unfolded into snowy days, shared laughter, and unforgettable moments.
Our Lapland Adventure
Why Lapland with Family?
Because where else can children meet Santa, cuddle huskies, glide across frozen lakes, and believe, just for a moment, that magic is real?
Tim and I spent a truly special December adventure in Lapland with my parents and our two children, Keanan and Kaylah and it felt like stepping straight into a storybook. Lapland is the perfect place to visit during the festive season. The air is crisp, the forests are dusted in white, and the lakes freeze into vast, glittering playgrounds.
One of our favourite experiences was snowmobiling across those frozen lakes. It’s exhilarating, peaceful, and wildly beautiful all at once. A little tip: take it easy when learning to steer, especially if you’re new to it. My parents discovered this firsthand and ended up in a snowbank a couple of times, which only added to the laughter and memories.
Dog sledding was pure magic. We met the huskies beforehand, got proper cuddles, and felt their excitement the moment they knew it was time to run. These dogs love what they do, and once you’re gliding along the snowy trails, surrounded by a winter wonderland, it’s impossible not to smile.
Lapland is filled with experiences that feel both magical and grounding, husky sledding through quiet forests, gentle reindeer sleigh rides, snowmobile safaris, and, of course, meeting Santa himself at Santa Claus Village. We also learned about the Sámi culture and spent time in a traditional yurt, which gave us a deeper appreciation for the people and traditions of this Arctic region.
Between tubing, skiing, Christmas villages and soaking in the beauty of it all, Lapland gave us laughter, connection, and memories we’ll carry forever. It’s a place that truly comes alive in winter and one that is absolutely worth the journey.
A Few Gentle Tips for Traveling to Lapland
What to Wear
Layering is everything in Lapland. Thermal base layers are essential, followed by warm mid-layers like fleece or wool, and a proper insulated winter coat. Waterproof snow pants, thick socks, insulated boots, gloves or mittens, scarves, and a good hat will keep you comfortable outdoors. Many excursions provide thermal suits, which are wonderful, especially for snowmobiling and husky rides.
What to Expect
Lapland in winter is cold, quiet, and incredibly beautiful. Days are shorter, but the soft Arctic light is magical. Life slows down here, and that’s part of the charm. Expect a peaceful pace mixed with bursts of adventure and childlike wonder.
Food & Dining
Meals are hearty and comforting, perfect for cold days. Think warming soups, salmon, reindeer dishes, potatoes, fresh bread, and delicious berries. Hot chocolate and warm drinks are everywhere and feel like a hug in a cup after time outdoors.
Excursions to Look For
Husky sledding and reindeer sleigh rides are must-dos, along with snowmobile safaris across frozen lakes. Tubing and skiing are great for families, and a visit to Santa Claus Village is pure magic for children (and adults, too). Learning about Sámi culture adds a meaningful and educational layer to the trip.
Closing Thoughts
Lapland isn’t just a destination, it’s a feeling. A place where families reconnect, laughter echoes across frozen lakes, and winter becomes something to celebrate rather than escape.
Lapland gave our family more than a holiday, it gave us moments we’ll talk about for years to come. Traveling with Tim, my parents, and our children, Keanan and Kaylah, reminded me how powerful shared experiences can be, especially in a place that invites wonder at every turn. It reminded us how special it is to slow down, bundle up, laugh together, and step into a place where winter feels alive with possibility. If you’re dreaming of a festive escape filled with wonder, warmth, and memory making, Lapland just might be waiting for you.
Until our next adventure, keep living life large,
Love,
Kimberley and Tim
