There are certain times in your life that you don’t realize are magical until you are living them. That was our life in Croatia.

Tim and I lived close to Opatija, right on the water. Each morning, we would wake up and walk along the coast, the sea glowing in shades of blue and turquoise that almost didn’t seem real. We would stop at our local café for coffee, just like everyone else. Nobody rushed. The locals would sit, chat, laugh, and truly enjoy the moment.

And of course, there were the morning sweets.

Fritule, those perfect little festive doughnuts. Crispy kroštule. Walnut and poppy seed rolls. Warm pastries filled with cheese. And kremšnita the most beautiful custard slice you’ve ever tasted. It became part of our daily ritual, and somehow, it never got old.

What I loved most about Croatia was the feeling of community. The people were warm, friendly, and always ready for a conversation. Even as visitors, we felt like we belonged.

We spent our time exploring the beautiful coastal towns nearby. The quiet charm of Njivice and Omišalj on Krk Island. The seaside promenade in Crikvenica. The historic harbours of Bakar and Kraljevica. And the hilltop town of Kastav, overlooking Rijeka, where the view stretched endlessly across the sea.

One of my favourite things to do was wander through the quaint local shops. Little boutiques tucked along stone streets, filled with beautiful Croatian designer pieces and stunning Italian clothes. Croatia is so close to Italy, and you can feel that influence in their fashion. I found some of the most unique pieces I have ever owned. Elegant linen dresses, handcrafted jewelry, and timeless pieces you simply don’t see anywhere else. Shopping there wasn’t about trends. It was about discovering something special, something with a story.

Life was simple. And it was beautiful.

One day, we decided to go for a drive into the mountains. No plan. Just curiosity. At some point, we realized we had taken a wrong turn. The roads became narrow and winding, and suddenly, out of nowhere, rally cars came racing toward us.

Fast. Loud. Relentless.

Drivers from different countries flying around corners, straight in our direction.

We didn’t know where to go.

We pulled over as far as we could, hearts pounding, watching car after car flash past us. It was terrifying in the moment, and yet afterward, we couldn’t stop laughing. We had literally driven into the middle of an international rally race.

Only in Croatia.

We also travelled south to Split and the breathtaking Dubrovnik. Walking along the ancient Walls of Dubrovnik was something I will never forget. Looking down at the terracotta rooftops and the shimmering sea beyond, it felt surreal.

Dubrovnik was also one of the main filming locations for Game of Thrones. As I walked through the streets, I could almost picture the characters walking beside me. It felt like stepping into another world, where history and storytelling blended together perfectly.

We visited Hvar, which was vibrant, glamorous, and surrounded by crystal clear water. The islands, the food, the energy, it is absolutely worth visiting. Croatia’s restaurants are incredible. Fresh seafood, local wines, olive oil, and meals made with love.

But one of the most special places we ever visited was the tiny hilltop town of Hum, known as the smallest town in the world.

It was quiet. Quaint. Magical.

Located in the heart of Istria, this region is famous for its wineries. We spent afternoons wine tasting, sitting with local winemakers, listening to their stories, and tasting beautiful Malvasia and Teran wines.

Some of the wineries, like Kozlović Winery and Kabola Winery, were unforgettable. Rolling vineyards, family traditions, and wine that truly reflected the land.

It wasn’t just wine tasting.

It was experiencing their way of life.

Croatia gave us adventure. Beauty. Peace. And stories we will tell forever.

It was never just about where we lived.

It was about how we lived.

And we lived it fully.
